P-20 Task Force Goal 1: Increase Student Achievement
Reaching out through Art and Reading (ROAR)
NIU College: College of Education; Department of Literacy Education
Location: Littlejohn Elementary, DeKalb, IL
Level: Kindergarten รข Grade 3
For the past ten years, the College of Education undergraduate students have had the opportunity to participate in the service learning course, Techniques of Tutoring (LTRE 231/431), otherwise known as the Reach Out through Art and Reading/Science Outreach Activities through Reading (ROAR/SOAR) program. The program consists of Read Aloud events combined with art and science activities designed to assist bilingual and monolingual children to improve and to develop their vocabulary and English listening skills. This mutually beneficial program provides a fun learning environment for the children while at the same time providing undergraduate education students with a valuable hands-on experience working with bilingual and monolingual children in kindergarten through third grade.
Milestones
LTRE 231/431 will be offered Spring 2010.
